Six Things the Lord Hates

5 Mar

God is love, but He doesn’t love our sin.  He died on the cross to take away our sins.  The Christian life isn’t about rules and not having any fun.  It’s about living a joyful, blessed life that others take note of.  When you are a positive, happy and funny person, (even on Monday morning,) you will probably stand out. 🙂    And that’s the point!  Allow your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and self-control be a model of Christ’s love to others.  The Bible tells us that they will know that we are Christians by our love. As a Christ follower, people should feel your peaceful and kind nature and be drawn to it.  Are people drawn to you?  Do they flock to you with help for their problems?  If so, it’s probably because they sense a peace on the inside of you that they want.  When you’re daily making it a point to spend time with God, pray, worship and listen to His voice, He will change you into a better person…a person that everyone wants to be around.

God wants us to love and be more like Him.  But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things that He doesn’t hate.  He hates sin.  Please don’t get this confused – He loves us and He knows that we are imperfect.  He desires for us to be holy like He is.  He’s not waiting up in heaven with a lightning bolt, ready to strike us every time we mess up.  He will LOVINGLY show us that our behavior is wrong.  He will LOVINGLY draw us back to him.  I recently talked to a girl who was beaten down.  She said her parents had pushed religion on her and made her feel guilty.  She felt dirty and thought that God felt the same way about her.  I told her that she was wrong.  I told her that God loved her.  He wanted to be her friend.  He wasn’t mad at her.

Don’t believe the lies that “religious” people tell you.  God is love!!  He wants you to cultivate the fruits of the spirit in your life – (love, joy, peace, patience, kindess, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.)  These things will bring you peace, happiness, and blessing!  He also wants you to turn from sin, or behavior that will bring about negative consequences.  Here’s where the six things that The Lord hates come into play.  (Yes, we have probably all done these things, but that’s not the point.  If we love God and want to please Him, we should do our best to avoid them.  Everyone slips up from time to time, and no one is perfect, but as you become more like Christ, you will find yourself wanting to please Him more and more, and you will begin to sin less and less.  The Christian life is a process…it may not happen overnight…but this amazing verse gives us some guidelines on behavior we should avoid.  And don’t just focus on what God hates…but think about doing the OPPOSITE in order to please Him.)  🙂

***I have added some study questions beside each verse in italics.

Proverbs 6:16-19

New International Version (NIV)

16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes, (do you think you’re better than other people or look down on others?)
a lying tongue, (do you tell little white lies here and there?)
hands that shed innocent blood, (do you let others take the blame for things you know you caused?)
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, (are you planning how to steal from someone, get over on someone, or seduce someone?)
feet that are quick to rush into evil, (do you run to the strip club, do you always want to be part of an argument, or are you quick to gossip or put others down?)
19 a false witness who pours out lies (do you make things up so that you’ll look better?  Do you enjoy stirring up trouble by lying on others?  Do you instigate?)
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. (Do people avoid inviting you to events b/c they know you’ll cause an argument, stir up trouble, and offend everyone?  Does your argumentative nature doesn’t bring disagreement, stress and strife wherever you go?  Do people associate your name with fights and arguments, versus someone who lovingly disagrees with others?)

Seek to please God everyday by avoiding doing those things that you know He hates, and instead, by doing what you know He loves. 🙂

Be blessed! 🙂
