Melissa Johnson – God says that I’m Beautiful!

28 Mar

For the next two weeks, we are doing a series on what God says about
beauty to lead up to our March Lunch, Fashion Show and Beauty Bash
to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Today’s interview will feature Melissa Johnson, an amazing woman of God, and a homeschooling mother of three.  I know that you will enjoy hearing from her!

What does beauty mean to you?

For me, the ultimate expression of beauty is found in Proverbs 31… It’s being a strong, confident woman who can fully rely on God, and bless her family and others in an abundance of creative and useful ways.  In the context of marriage, it’s fulfilling her role in the team that God created. It doesn’t mean looking or behaving perfectly, but it does mean giving people your best and always being ready to offer kindness, (even in unexpectedly irksome situations.)

I would say it also means being willing to be yourself and let your unique personality shine, rather than trying to box it up and package yourself to look and act like everyone else. I remember in my youth trying so hard to be someone else… someone everyone would think was pretty and likeable, and instead, I just ended up even more awkward than ever. When I let go and accepted who I was and the things that I loved, (like long fantasy novels, watching sci-fi marathons, board games, and acting silly,) I became so much happier.  That’s when I started to truly be beautiful.

What inner trait about yourself makes you feel beautiful?

I would say it’s my willingness to be myself, rather than trying to please others by becoming what I think they want to see in me. With me, what you see is what you get, and I try hard to be honest and forthright in my actions and appearance.

What outer feature about yourself do you love?

My health. Sounds strange, but I am extraordinarily thankful that, for the most part, I stay healthy and fit without having to kill myself watching my diet or exercise routines (though like anyone else, I can’t go crazy or lay around all day.)  I rarely get sick, and I’m so thankful for that, because as the meme says, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

What is one (inexpensive or free thing) you or other women can do to make themselves feel beautiful?

HELP SOMEONE ELSE. Quit focusing on your outer appearance and help someone else, and it’s amazing how quickly you will worry less about how you look or appear to others, and instead, become filled with the joy and peace that surpasses understanding, and that comes from having the Holy Spirit guide your life. When you focus on others instead of yourself, you feel beautiful because you love seeing the fruits of your labor, rather than worrying about those frown lines and baby belly scars.

Thanks again to Melissa for her fun and honest interview!
