Why I’m Taking it Easy this Year

9 Jan

day 3

So for the past thirty years, I feel like I’ve been working super hard at all my goals.  While it’s great to work hard, I also want to work on playing harder this year.  🙂  And by playing, I mean taking vacations with my family, doing new outings with my kids and husband, and more coffee dates and girls nights out, (or preferably ” girls night’s in” so that I can relax more…unless of course “out” involves PF or Peter Chang’s!)  🙂

For example, today I took my kids to swim lessons this morning, and they asked if we could go to the beach afterwards.  I’m honestly thinking, “what…why would we go to the beach, I want to go home and nap or play on my Tablet in bed …”  But I thought about it more and realized that I need to embrace the spontaneous more, to make fun and new memories, and that hey, the beach might just be nice on a cold day, (and since I live 20 minutes away, I really should enjoy it more than just when friends come to visit in the summer and want me to take them to the oceanfront.)  🙂

day 6

When we got to the beach, I was immediately glad we went.  I walked right down to the waves and took a deep breath of fresh air.  The kids and I dug in the sand trying to find water – nope, we didn’t get that deep, but my arms got a workout!lol…we watched a few surfers surf in the cool waters, met two friendly ladies who were walking their dogs – one was a friendly white haired dog named Mozart who tried to eat our food…lol, and we had a Paleo picnic on our blanket.  (Well, Mommy had a Paleo picinic – the kids had sandwiches, and I had Skinny Iaso Tea and a tangerine.)  🙂  And as I snapped a few pictures, I remembered how much I loved photography, and thought about getting a new camera so that I could take better pictures of nature and of family.

day 2

Spending time at the beach today was a total breath of fresh air, (not to be cliche.)  🙂  I realized that I need to be more spontaneous.  I need to make sure that I’m having fun every few days, and not just checking off things on my to do list.

day 7

As I drove to the salon later to Airbrush some of my clients, I smiled as I opened my back door to put the supplies in, and saw a backseat covered in sand.  That just means, A) I had fun, and B) now I have an excuse to get my car cleaned!lol…

day 4

Please don’t forget to take some time out to enjoy today, to enjoy your life, and to enjoy your kids.  Turning 31 this year was huge for me – I worked super hard up until this point, and now it’s time to relax more.

day 6

So that’s why this year, I’m slowing down a bit.

How about you??  How do you plan on slowing down and making time for what counts?  What fun things do you want to do with friends and family this year that you haven’t done as much before?

If you get a chance, check out my two favorite minimalism websites when you get a chance – The Minimalists and Becoming Minimalist – they have definitely discovered some great ways to slow down, de-clutter life, and enjoy what really matters.  : )

Have you Forgotten to Have Fun?

24 May

myrtle 2

Lately, I’ve had a few friends come to me and ask me how to balance their time better.  They want to be good parents, have time for themselves, and have fun, but they feel like currently, they’re just going through the motions.

What really helped me was something that I read at one of my favorite blogs called “Simple Homeschool.”  Basically, the author that said that she only does what is “hers,” and nothing else.  So I decided to do the same.  I made a list of everything that was mine: my Lauren’s Lathers business, running my preschool, my husband and family, writing, and teaching online.

That was my list.  Everything else that came my way, I had to say “no” to in order to keep my sanity.  🙂  This also frees up lots of extra time for spontaneous outings with friends, mini stay-cations or vacations, and more time to do things in the community or with my family.

Just the other week, my mom also asked how I did it all.  I told her the same thing – “I don’t.”  If it’s not on my list, I don’t do it.

Ever since I’ve cleared out my schedule more, there’s lots more time for laughing and fun.  I’ll end up having a free afternoon or evening to go on a date night with my sweetie, to go out for ice cream with the family, or to spend the day with an old friend.

Just because we become adults doesn’t mean that the fun should end!  🙂  I always try to schedule at least two things a week that make me smile, or that I look forward to.  Don’t just live your life going through the motions – ex: eat, work, make dinner, clean the house, put the kids to bed, and pass out in bed yourself…

Figure out a way to live a life that allows you to explore your passions and be happy.  You only have one life to live, and God wants us to enjoy our lives – He created the world so that we could enjoy it!  : )  Today, figure out a way to bring some joy and fun back into your life.

Blessings,

Lauren

Today’s my B-day! What I learned this year…

27 Dec

christmas 11

Today is my 30th birthday, so I wanted to share a few things that I’ve learned this year! 🙂

1. Make time to enjoy family!  Throughout my 20’s, I was super busy and always trying to achieve.  And while that was kind of a good thing b/c I did accomplish a lot, I am making a point now to slow down and enjoy my time and my family more. 🙂  On your death bed, you’ll never say, “I wish I’d spend more time at the office.”

christmas 12

2. Exercise is important!  I love Zumba, but hadn’t had a lot of time this year with starting my businesses, so I didn’t do it as much, or go to the gym.  I was recently re-motivated by a good friend who wakes up at 5 a.m., swims for 45 minutes, goes to work full time, and then volunteers in her spare time, (and still has time for fun.)  Now, I’ll be waking up earlier to to devotionals and 20 minutes of Zumba before my preschool babies arrive at 7:15 a.m.  🙂

3. Not everyone will like you.  No matter how nice, friendly, or kind you are, some people won’t like you.  And while I always knew this, (and honestly didn’t care,) lol, I would sometimes still wonder why.  But now, I still don’t care, and I am done wondering why.  🙂  All I can do is keep moving forward, and those who don’t like me or resent me for whatever reason can do so without a thought of mine!  🙂

4. Schedule days where you do nothing.  This is so important.  If you don’t have quiet time to think, you may not realize the things you’re doing wrong, or could be doing better.  You won’t realize that your life is going off track, or that you’ve become stagnant in achieving your goals.  Alone time helps you to be honest with yourself.

5. Live by a budget.  I always knew about Dave Ramsey, but had never tried the cash/envelope system.  Recently I lost my debit card, and was forced to use cash for everything.   It really is true that when you use cash, you can physically see how quickly it is slipping through your hands, versus a painless swipe.  (I am not knocking credit cards; I just realize that implementing the envelope system for me is going to be super helpful!  🙂

That’s it…off to take a nap and then go celebrate my birthday this evening.  How about you?  What did you learn this year?  I’d love to hear!  🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

Finger Painting with Diaper Rash Cream

30 May

diaper
This morning I noticed white paste on the walls, and my daughter was standing there looking guilty. I  put two and two together, and realized that she was finger painting on the walls with diaper rash cream!!lol…

I wanted to laugh but didn’t, (so as not to encourage her…lol,) but it really was funny! She got upset that she had to stop, but she was fine once we cleaned her up and brought out the crayons, coloring books and kitchen set! 🙂

This morning was a reminder to me to never take life too seriously. I could have fussed and gotten upset and let it ruin my morning, but what would that have accomplished? There are people with much worse problems than diaper rash cream on their walls!!lol…

IMG_6067

There are moms who can’t afford diaper cream, or maybe don’t have a place to live with their kids.

Today, take the focus off of yourself, and focus on helping others! 🙂

Here is an opportunity to do just that: we are having a Baby Shower for the Women of the Crisis Pregnancy Center who otherwise might not get a shower – I hope that you’ll consider joining, or donating food, or mommy and baby gifts.

Do you choose money over family?

24 May

girls nite

Recently someone hinted at me that if I wanted to make more money, I would need to work more.

I don’t think this person was bad…they just had different priorities from me.

God has a different plan for each of us.  Some work in an office, some work from home, some work in the house taking care of their kids, and some work on the missions field in India! 🙂

sleepover

And I hope that one day we can all get to the place where we understand that just because someone takes a different path from us, it doesn’t make them wrong, (or us better!)

In regards to the person who thought I should be working more hours to make more money, maybe for them, it is a priority to live in a million dollar home.

For me, I would rather have my nice 2700 square foot home, (which is more than enough space for my family and I,) 🙂 and not have to work 16 hour days and never see my children just to keep up a mortgage.

Yes; some people must work 16 hours just to keep their heads above water, so I am not judging them at all.

But for me, I have the choice, and I’m fine with what I have. I’m not going to work more and be away from my kids just so I can have a nicer car.  I don’t just want to see my kids before they go to bed, or when they’re already asleep for the night.

So for me, I choose to forego the money and have that sweet time with my little ones, cuddling, watching “Cars,” and eating Crunch Berries after dinner.  🙂

Remember – it doesn’t matter what other people have to say about your choices; it matters what God thinks!

Lauren

Jenn Smith – God says I’m Beautiful

13 Mar

jenn smith

For the next two weeks, we are doing a series on what God says on beauty to lead up to our March Beauty Bash and Lunch to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Today’s interview will feature Jenn Smith, a Communication Coordinator, Plus Size Fashion Model, and an amazing woman of God who is beautiful both inside and out!

What does beauty mean to you?

One’s attitude, heart and character really show brighter than any physical feature.   I will never forget when as a teen, a guy friend of mine said that a girl who was pretty by the world’s standards wasn’t attractive to him because her attitude stunk, and that it even overpowered her physical features.

The mind is also a major part of beauty. Have you ever noticed the difference in the presence of a positive person vs. a negative person? Thinking positively is good for your mind and your health. A positive person is less stressed.  Stress can show up in demeanor and outward appearance.

Also, a person who has a healthy spiritual life has hope.  They have something to look forward to.  They are loving, serving, working towards goals, and have a purpose, all of which feed into self-esteem and shine brighter than any physical feature.

Beauty begins with the heart.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and God created us in His image. God does not make ugly things. One of the things that makes us beautiful, (besides the fact that we are women,) is that we are unique.

What inner trait about yourself makes you feel beautiful?

I love helping others to grow and to become successful. There is a gift test online, (gifttest.org,) that details seven gifts. I am an Encourager/Giver, a Servant, and merciful.  Understanding your gifts adds to your purpose and you feelings of beauty.

What outer feature about yourself do you love?

My lips. 🙂 Also, the scar on my lower back because it reminds me of what God did for me – (…He healed me in an accident where I could have been paralyzed,) – and He was with me throughout my recovery.

What is one (inexpensive or free thing) 🙂 women can do to make themselves feel beautiful?

Free – spend time with God and positive, supportive Christians, live life to the fullest, serve others with a grateful heart, and give of yourself.

Inexpensive – invest in a good skin care – (not just soap and water,) – and especially a moisturizer, (even for those with oily skin).  Good skin care is priceless, and believe it or not, it doesn’t take much work. I’ve been using Artistry for about 7 years now, and it’s like I stopped aging as soon as I started using it.

Blessings,

Jenn

Joy – God says that I’m Beautiful

13 Mar

joy

For the next two weeks, we are doing a series on what God says about beauty to lead up to our March Beauty Bash and Lunch to benefit the Crisis Pregnancy Center.  Today’s interview will feature Joy, an Adjunct Professor and Specialty Retail Manager, and an amazingly beautiful woman of God, (both inside and out.)  I know that you will enjoy hearing from her!

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty is a gentle elegance that the Lord has placed on the inside of a person that emulates itself through a smile, dancing eyes, unique features, a laugh, a tear, a big heart, a whisper, a single word, a soft touch, a hug, a sweet spirit, and a warmness beyond comprehension, flowing into the natural that blesses not only the person, but others who come in contact with that individual.

What inner traits make you feel beautiful?

-my innocent and fun outlook on life,

-my character,

-a quiet confidence in knowing that God’s Got my Back!

-my-‘ I want to see the good in people over the bad’,

– I have a lot of love bubbling inside,

-the knowing that God is NOT finished with me yet,

-HIS ‘Joy’ lives in me and is tickled to get out in creative ways every day,

-and my faith in His love letter to me {Psalms 139} and knowing that the  Lord loves me and made me extra special J

Which of your outer features do you love?

LOL, My “backside!” 🙂

What is an inexpensive or free thing you or other women can do to make them feel beautiful?

Look at yourself in the mirror every day and Thank the Lord for making you the way He made you…and tell yourself (with a big smile), “I AM BEAUTIFUL, I AM SPECIAL, AND GOD LOVE S ME!  And one day ALL by yourself in a room, your back yard, or in your bathroom, listen to music that makes you want to dance …and do just that, DANCE!!!

Blessings,

Joy

Thanks again to Joy for her fun and honest interview!
