What if my gift is too small?

International Kids 2

With social media, TV, and Facebook, we often see amazing stories of people who are breaking Olympic records, traveling to other countries helping sex-trafficked women and children, and winning all kinds of awards.  Sometimes we are happy for them.  Other times it can make us feel as though we should be doing more.

But we should never compare our gifts to others.  Recently a friend told me about a trip she was taking across the world to help abused women.  I could have been jealous, wishing that I too could travel internationally and make a difference.  But I know that for me, I am making a difference right at home. 🙂

Right now, my mission is to make a difference right here in my city by loving my children and the children who come to my preschool.

Right now, my mission is to love my husband and friends, and be an example to others that marriage still works.  🙂

Let’s never compare ourselves to others and think that the gifts we can share with others are “too small.”  Not at all. 🙂 Our gifts are just different.  Some gifts may bring fame and fortune, and other gifts may not, but that doesn’t make one better than the other.

Be happy with the gifts that you can share with others.  What is a gift that you can share with others today? : )

Adventures in Homeschooling

29 Jan

Image

As some of you recently know, the kiddies and I just started homeschooling, and we absolutely love it!

Because the babies are so little, I am mostly doing learn through play, but we also have some basics that we do every day: letters, numbers, penmanship, Bible, reading, practical life activities, Spanish, and Montessori inspired lessons and stations.

OK – that was a little more than basics, 🙂 but for a former teacher, I can’t help it – I love learning and I love teaching my kids to love to learn too!

Here are a few pictures from today – keep in mind that it snowed last night, so that made homeschooling even more fun – we got to learn while cozied up under blankets, and the kiddies were excited, knowing that they would get to play in the snow once school was done! 🙂

Here is a picture of Gabriel doing a lesson on patterns and colors with glass rocks.

Here is a picture of Zoe playing with letters and numbers.

Although I am not a “puzzle person,” lol, I am learning to enjoy it for the kids sake! 🙂

Image

We started early today, so we finished around 10 a.m. – enough time to watch some fun educational videos that reinforced our Spanish, (Dora!!,) 🙂 and Sesame Street videos that reinforced our numbers and letters.  We also did some singing and dancing with maracas that I brought back from missions trips to Mexico.  Also, Gabriel dressed up like a ninja, but he declined any photo ops!lol…

I’d say it’s been a fun day so far!

How about you?   Do you homeschool?  How do you teach your kiddies?

Blessings,

Lauren

When You Feel like you’re not good enough

babies on bikes

Here is a picture of my kids riding their bikes in the backyard – and yes, you can see the homemade safety patio gate made from lawn chairs, a toy roof, and the grill!lol…just trying to keep my babies safe! 🙂

Often, I wonder if I’m doing everything I can to be a good mom.  In whatever stage of life we’re in, career person, mother, father, student, or wherever we are, we often have a nagging sense that we could be doing more, or doing a better job.

As a mom, I read all of the mommy blogs, but lately, I’ve had to step back.  I have had to realize that God has equipped me to be the best mom that I can be.  Yes; I can read and study on how to do better, how to best educate my kids, what activities to do with them, and all of the parenting techniques that I can find in the  books, but nothing is better than just being a person who loves God and has His peace surrounding you.  🙂

That’s what my kids will really benefit from – a mama who is totally and 100% focused on loving and pleasing God – let’s face it…the peace, joy, and love that radiates from someone who has been in the presence of our Lord is just amazing, and everyone can feel it and enjoy it! 🙂

Whatever stage you’re in, set your eyes on things above.  Nothing else matters but God.  If you lose your house, you can still have God.  Material things come and go, but a loving relationship with your heavenly Father, and the peace that it brings, will stand the test of fire and time! 🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

When people laugh at your beliefs…

23 Dec

persecuted gal

Maybe you have shared about Christ or the Bible with your friends, and they have laughed, told you it’s no longer relevant, or even gotten angry with you.  Maybe you’re feeling let down after a negative experience with sharing your faith.

But friends, have you forgotten that the word tell us in James 1:2-4, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Frankly, the world isn’t always going to like Christian views. That’s nothing new, but it doesn’t mean that you should stop living for Christ. It doesn’t mean that you should change or water down what the Bible says. Even if people laugh, keep on loving and speaking the truth.

As followers of God, we can’t be swayed by people who mistreat us, laugh at us, or don’t want to hear our message. Jesus was persecuted, and if we follow Him, we probably will be too. Dust your feet off and keep on loving. Be the bigger person. And if not everyone accepts you or your message, that’s OK.  🙂   Jesus loves you, so take your eyes off of your circumstances, and keep your focus on the only one whose opinion of you really matters!

Blessings! 🙂

Lauren

God gave me Freebies! Yeah!!

16 Nov

Image

Wow – it is almost the end of 2013!  Can you believe it?  This year has had it’s shares of ups and downs for us for sure!

We moved to a new house, (after going back and forth with the previous owners for almost 6 months,) I started a new job, we endured two government shutdowns, (my hubby works for the govt.,) the babies started a new preschool, and the list continues…  🙂 I once read somewhere that 3-4 changes/yr can cause stress, and we probably had almost a whopping six or more changes this year!

But even with all the changes and financial ups and downs, God has still been faithful.  He’s blessed us during times of financial strain, and restored us with sweet reminders that He is still God! 🙂  Here are just a few:

1.  I found out that I have a three foot rosemary bush in my yard.  Fresh  and FREE herbs!!  Can you say rosemary chicken, rosemary veggies, rosemary everything!!!lol…last night I made rosemary veggies, and this morning, I made smoked sausages and onions with rosemary for lunch.

Image

2. When we visited my husbands family down South, we had a nice little free vacation, went to football games, out to eat, and played around at Walmart!lol…It was a nice break!  🙂 When we left, they gave us a cooler full of fresh meat from their freezer.  Meat is expensive these days.  That meat lasted us for a whole week, and we didn’t have to buy groceries.

3. About a month back, I went to a women’s conference, and stayed at the end to tear down.  I asked where the two veggie trays and hummus needed to go, and they told me to take them home.  Again, a week’s supply of fresh veggies and two industrial sized tubs of hummus.  Thank you, Lord! 🙂

I truly believe that God orchestrates events to show us that He hasn’t forgotten us and is still in control.

I pray that He blesses you too and reminds you that even when life gets tough, He’s still there.  Hang in there and trust Him to get you through!

Blessings,

Lauren

When I felt like giving up…

21 Sep

Image

So often, people think we have it all together based on appearances, (like this picture of my friend and I before a wedding.)  But behind the smiling facebook photos, 🙂 the truth is that everyone has faced a time in life where they felt like giving up.  You have probably heard the verse, “do not grow weary in doing good, for in due time you will reap a harvest,” but it can still be tough to keep on doing the right thing when you’re worn out and don’t see any good coming out of your efforts.

That has been me so many times.  Once I had a conversation with a friend, (I can’t even remember who it was now…lol,) but I remember us saying that we sometimes felt overwhelmed and tired just thinking about all that we knew God wanted us to do.  Why couldn’t things just be “easy,” we joked, (we were joking, but really, we kind of meant it.)  We were growing weary serving the Lord.

But now, I truly believe that there are seasons in life.  Some seasons are busy – we’re out there doing a whole lot of work for the Lord.  In other seasons that we go through, it’s just us and God.  We wonder why things have gotten more quiet. We may feel like we’re not being used by God.  We may feel like giving up.  And this has been me many times.  But in those times, we have to ask God to refresh us and give us back our passion to serve Him.

Image

Recently I had a time like this.  I was so tired of giving.  I just wanted to sit on the couch for a month, do nothing, and eat cheetos!lol…And yes, relaxation time is good. 🙂  …but God showed me that once I was done relaxing, it was time to get moving again.

So there you have it.  That’s the truth!  We all have our cheeto days…but I pray that you do not get stuck there…keep on moving, and ask God for a sign for what direction you should be moving towards if you’re confused.  Sometimes it’s just as a simple as a word from friend, or a picture that you see in a magazine.  God speaks in all kinds of ways!  🙂  Don’t give up – God loves you even though you may be going through a tough time.  Be encouraged!  Take time to refresh yourself in His presence.  Maybe it’s turning off all the distractions and having some quiet time with Him.  Just like we share secrets with close friends, I believe that God has amazing secrets to share with us – we just have to be spending time with Him to hear.  🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

It’s been a while – what we have been up to!

27 Aug

IMG_9922
I just realized that it has been a few weeks since my last blog, and here’s why: I just started a new job, the kids are getting ready for preschool, and I’ve been getting the house clean!lol…that last one may be an everyday occurrence for some of you, but tidying up doesn’t come naturally for me, so it’s something that I have been working on. 🙂

IMG_9683

We have also been visiting the park more, (especially since it’s right across the street,) 🙂 and I started a new moms group that has some of it’s meetings at night, so I can work and still be a part of it. …So there have been lots of changes, but they are all so much fun!

IMG_6792

I’m also excited about the next women’s conference we’ll be having. So many women feel like they’re “just” a mom, or “just” a call center worker, or “just” someone’s wife”… so many of us feel defined by our jobs, the house we live in, if we have kids or not, or who we’re married to. But God says that we are His daughters, and that we’re fearfully and wonderfully made! He says that we are created in His image, and that makes us so much more than just how we look, who our friends are, or the size of our house.

IMG_9089

I am in the process of getting the date and location for our next event, and I already have some great speakers lined up. I’m excited to see what the Lord does!

Blessings,

Lauren
