Why I’m Taking it Easy this Year

9 Jan

day 3

So for the past thirty years, I feel like I’ve been working super hard at all my goals.  While it’s great to work hard, I also want to work on playing harder this year.  🙂  And by playing, I mean taking vacations with my family, doing new outings with my kids and husband, and more coffee dates and girls nights out, (or preferably ” girls night’s in” so that I can relax more…unless of course “out” involves PF or Peter Chang’s!)  🙂

For example, today I took my kids to swim lessons this morning, and they asked if we could go to the beach afterwards.  I’m honestly thinking, “what…why would we go to the beach, I want to go home and nap or play on my Tablet in bed …”  But I thought about it more and realized that I need to embrace the spontaneous more, to make fun and new memories, and that hey, the beach might just be nice on a cold day, (and since I live 20 minutes away, I really should enjoy it more than just when friends come to visit in the summer and want me to take them to the oceanfront.)  🙂

day 6

When we got to the beach, I was immediately glad we went.  I walked right down to the waves and took a deep breath of fresh air.  The kids and I dug in the sand trying to find water – nope, we didn’t get that deep, but my arms got a workout!lol…we watched a few surfers surf in the cool waters, met two friendly ladies who were walking their dogs – one was a friendly white haired dog named Mozart who tried to eat our food…lol, and we had a Paleo picnic on our blanket.  (Well, Mommy had a Paleo picinic – the kids had sandwiches, and I had Skinny Iaso Tea and a tangerine.)  🙂  And as I snapped a few pictures, I remembered how much I loved photography, and thought about getting a new camera so that I could take better pictures of nature and of family.

day 2

Spending time at the beach today was a total breath of fresh air, (not to be cliche.)  🙂  I realized that I need to be more spontaneous.  I need to make sure that I’m having fun every few days, and not just checking off things on my to do list.

day 7

As I drove to the salon later to Airbrush some of my clients, I smiled as I opened my back door to put the supplies in, and saw a backseat covered in sand.  That just means, A) I had fun, and B) now I have an excuse to get my car cleaned!lol…

day 4

Please don’t forget to take some time out to enjoy today, to enjoy your life, and to enjoy your kids.  Turning 31 this year was huge for me – I worked super hard up until this point, and now it’s time to relax more.

day 6

So that’s why this year, I’m slowing down a bit.

How about you??  How do you plan on slowing down and making time for what counts?  What fun things do you want to do with friends and family this year that you haven’t done as much before?

If you get a chance, check out my two favorite minimalism websites when you get a chance – The Minimalists and Becoming Minimalist – they have definitely discovered some great ways to slow down, de-clutter life, and enjoy what really matters.  : )

Have you Forgotten to Have Fun?

24 May

myrtle 2

Lately, I’ve had a few friends come to me and ask me how to balance their time better.  They want to be good parents, have time for themselves, and have fun, but they feel like currently, they’re just going through the motions.

What really helped me was something that I read at one of my favorite blogs called “Simple Homeschool.”  Basically, the author that said that she only does what is “hers,” and nothing else.  So I decided to do the same.  I made a list of everything that was mine: my Lauren’s Lathers business, running my preschool, my husband and family, writing, and teaching online.

That was my list.  Everything else that came my way, I had to say “no” to in order to keep my sanity.  🙂  This also frees up lots of extra time for spontaneous outings with friends, mini stay-cations or vacations, and more time to do things in the community or with my family.

mommmas 2

Just the other week, my mom also asked how I did it all.  I told her the same thing – “I don’t.”  If it’s not on my list, I don’t do it.

Ever since I’ve cleared out my schedule more, there’s lots more time for laughing and fun.  I’ll end up having a free afternoon or evening to go on a date night with my sweetie, to go out for ice cream with the family, or to spend the day with an old friend.

Just because we become adults doesn’t mean that the fun should end!  🙂  I always try to schedule at least two things a week that make me smile, or that I look forward to.  Don’t just live your life going through the motions – ex: eat, work, make dinner, clean the house, put the kids to bed, and pass out in bed yourself…

Figure out a way to live a life that allows you to explore your passions and be happy.  You only have one life to live, and God wants us to enjoy our lives – He created the world so that we could enjoy it!  : )  Today, figure out a way to bring some joy and fun back into your life.

Blessings,

Lauren

Today’s my B-day! What I learned this year…

27 Dec

christmas 11

Today is my 30th birthday, so I wanted to share a few things that I’ve learned this year! 🙂

1. Make time to enjoy family!  Throughout my 20’s, I was super busy and always trying to achieve.  And while that was kind of a good thing b/c I did accomplish a lot, I am making a point now to slow down and enjoy my time and my family more. 🙂  On your death bed, you’ll never say, “I wish I’d spend more time at the office.”

christmas 12

2. Exercise is important!  I love Zumba, but hadn’t had a lot of time this year with starting my businesses, so I didn’t do it as much, or go to the gym.  I was recently re-motivated by a good friend who wakes up at 5 a.m., swims for 45 minutes, goes to work full time, and then volunteers in her spare time, (and still has time for fun.)  Now, I’ll be waking up earlier to to devotionals and 20 minutes of Zumba before my preschool babies arrive at 7:15 a.m.  🙂

3. Not everyone will like you.  No matter how nice, friendly, or kind you are, some people won’t like you.  And while I always knew this, (and honestly didn’t care,) lol, I would sometimes still wonder why.  But now, I still don’t care, and I am done wondering why.  🙂  All I can do is keep moving forward, and those who don’t like me or resent me for whatever reason can do so without a thought of mine!  🙂

4. Schedule days where you do nothing.  This is so important.  If you don’t have quiet time to think, you may not realize the things you’re doing wrong, or could be doing better.  You won’t realize that your life is going off track, or that you’ve become stagnant in achieving your goals.  Alone time helps you to be honest with yourself.

5. Live by a budget.  I always knew about Dave Ramsey, but had never tried the cash/envelope system.  Recently I lost my debit card, and was forced to use cash for everything.   It really is true that when you use cash, you can physically see how quickly it is slipping through your hands, versus a painless swipe.  (I am not knocking credit cards; I just realize that implementing the envelope system for me is going to be super helpful!  🙂

That’s it…off to take a nap and then go celebrate my birthday this evening.  How about you?  What did you learn this year?  I’d love to hear!  🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

Step Back!!

27 Mar

IMG_9279

This morning God told me to “step back.”  Wow!! 🙂  Don’t worry, it is a good thing!lol…

So often we try to make things happen ourselves, but at the end of the day, God is the only one who can truly make things work out, or give us what we “think” is success, (which often may look different than we originally thought anyway.)  🙂

So today, I am stepping out of the way to give God room to do what He wants.

IMG_6250

This is not always easy!  I like to be in charge.  I like to “run the show!” lol   …and this is not to say that I can’t put forth the effort, but instead that I have to stop trying so hard, relax, and trust God that my efforts will work out and be blessed.

Just the other day, I was helping to coordinate my friend’s wedding reception.

I was running around and telling people where to line up, checking names off the guest list, and going over last minute details with the other coordinator.

After it was all over, I whispered to my hubby with a smile, “I like being in charge,”  to which he replied with a grin, “I know…the only problem is when you take that attitude home.”  🙂

chocolate 1

He meant it in a funny way, (and maybe there was a little truth to it…lol,)  but it is a good reminder – we can’t always be in charge.  God needs to be a part of every decision too.

Today, I hope that you remember the same! 🙂

Blessings!

Drop out of the “Ain’t it Awful Club!”

12 Mar

IMG_0184(1)

This is a quote from one of my favorite books, “The Success Principles,” by Jack Canfield.

The advice is to “drop out of the ‘ain’t it awful club,’ and surround yourself with successful people.

I love this advice because believe it or not, I used to be very negative.  I would assume the worst about people and situations.

The change has been gradual, but I finally see how important it is to see the good in people and life, and to think positively.

Here is some advice from the chapter, (with my commentary in italics.)  🙂

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” Jim Rohn.

Who are you spending your time with?

You become like the people you spend the most time with.  “Pay any price to stay in the presence of extraordinary people,” Mike Murdock.

Do you surround yourself with people who spur you on to learn new things, to try out new ideas, and to grow as a person?

IMG_3157

“Confidence is contagious.  So is lack of confidence,” Vince Lombardi.

Do you think defeated thoughts, or do you force yourself to believe the best?

Drop out of the “ain’t it awful” club.  “There are two types of people – anchors and motors.  You want to lose the anchors and get with the motors because the motors are going somewhere and they’re having fun.  The anchors will just drag you down,” Wyland.

Think of your closest friends.  Do they bring you down and make you feel depressed, or do they inspire you and bring joy?

Be selective.  “I just do not hang around anybody that I don’t want to be with.  Period.  For me, that’s been a blessing, and I can stay positive.  I hang around people who are happy, who are growing, who want to learn, who don’t mind saying sorry or thank you…and [are] having a fun time,” John Assaraf.

Choose your friends and close acquaintances wisely.  I don’t allow anyone in my inner circle who laughs at my dreams, talks negatively about my ideas, puts me down, or who consistently sees the glass as half empty.

IMG_7330

Avoid toxic people.

If someone is mean, gossips, puts me down, puts others down, and is rude or disrespectful, then I choose not to be around them.

Surround yourself with successful people.

Surround yourself with those who know more than you and are further along than you – then you’ll always be learning and becoming more successful!

This is not to say that we can’t help others who may be negative, or that we have to be perfect people who never have bad days.  It’s OK to have a bad day or be sad.

But all of that being said, I do make a  conscious choice to spend my time with and choose friends who are positive, who see the good in life, and who inspire me.  Plus, negative people don’t like me very much anyway – I usually try and find the good in everything, so that upsets them!lol…  Choose today which type of person you will be! 🙂

Blessings! :)

My Lazy Day on the Couch

21 Jan

Lately I have been so busy with everything – unwinding from the holidays, unpacking the news house, ( as seen below,) working out at the gym, finishing editing the book, training at work, and getting another certification…

house 1

…that sometimes it seems like life is moving faster than I am! 🙂

So lately, I’ve figured out two ways to buy myself more time:

1. Turn off the T.V. – …well how can you do this is if your family’s watching, you may be thinking??? 🙂 Well, if Veggie Tales is on, or my hubby is watching TV, then that’s fine…the point is that I’m not spending MY time in front of it. 🙂

four babies

2. I am only doing activities that I truly love or that are helping me reach the goals that God has for me. That doesn’t mean that I won’t volunteer or help others – I will just try to limit myself to two or three groups or committee’s at a time.

Since doing this, I have so much more free time in my day. (Of course I had it all along, I’m just now realizing it w/the recent changes.) 🙂 Hopefully, you’ll be able to find some ways to regain your time and focus on doing only the things God has for you.

Recently at dinner, my husband said, it’s better to finish one thing than to be working on ten. Wow, this really got to me. I actually stopped eating my crab legs for a second to make a mental note of it!lol…

IMG_7258

But the crab legs were so yummy, I had to go back and devour them..lol…

So for me, 2013 will be about BALANCE: finishing up projects I’ve been working on for years, working on some new goals of mine, and doing some fun things for myself.

So far, I’ve had some girls nights in, colored my hair, started studying for my real estate license, and am 27 pages from finishing editing the book. I’ve gotten promoted at work, got a raise, and am settling into the new house. I’m figuring out what activities I need to do, and which I don’t.

IMG_6199

hair 2

And I’m realizing that with all of my hard work, it’s OK to also have a lazy day on the couch every now and then, like today. 🙂  It’s OK to take an evening alone at the bookstore to read some magazines, have a raspberry mocha, and munch on a mint grasshopper biscotti.  🙂  It’s OK to just relax and take some time for me!!

No car for a week!! Ahhh!!!

19 Jul

Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

This week, my hubby’s car has been in the shop getting fixed, so he’s been driving mine to work.

Unless I want to wake up three hours earlier and get two kids ready to drop him off to work, then I am at the house without a car.

It’s actually been really interesting.

The house is a little cleaner because I’m stuck here and end up cleaning!lol…

I do miss my playdate’s and meeting up with friends, though!

Tonight we pick up the car and things return to normal, but I did (re) learn something from being without a car for a week: you don’t appreciate what you have until it’s gone! 🙂

When I had my car, I would always hope and dream about one day getting a white Hummer!lol…While I still would love a White Hummer, (anyone want to give me one for free???hahaha,) now I appreciate my little four door silver Sedan even more.

Be blessed! 🙂
