My Happy, Frugal Thanksgiving Wish

28 Nov

hubby pic

Here is a picture of my hubby and I at a recent wedding.  Like most Thanksgivings, we ate a-lot!lol…  Let’s face it.  For most of us, Thanksgiving is all about the yams, stuffing, turkey, (repeat!lol,) and then passing out in front of the TV to watch football, and starting over.  🙂 Yes, I love to eat too, but let’s not forget to remember the thing we should be most thankful for – all the blessings that our God has given us.

Here is a picture of some of the food at a recent party I attended – this might look like a simple spread to some, but let’s not forget that there are people out there who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.   We’re upset that we haven’t lost weight, while others are wondering where their next meal is coming from.  While we are busy trying to de clutter, design, and stage our houses, there are people who are wondering how they’ll get toys this Christmas.  (Below is a picture of my son and his friend – we went through the toys and gave many of them away.) 🙂

So, let’s not get so caught up in the gluttony and materialism, and forget to thank God for the things that really matter – for the things that are eternal.  Set your eyes on things above.  We are on this earth for a short time.  All of the riches, 401K and retirement savings, awards, glory, houses, and things will one day slip through our fingers as we pass on to be with Jesus, the eternal lover of our souls!  Let’s begin living for the things that really matter, and give thanks for the little things! 🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

When I felt like giving up…

21 Sep

Image

So often, people think we have it all together based on appearances, (like this picture of my friend and I before a wedding.)  But behind the smiling facebook photos, 🙂 the truth is that everyone has faced a time in life where they felt like giving up.  You have probably heard the verse, “do not grow weary in doing good, for in due time you will reap a harvest,” but it can still be tough to keep on doing the right thing when you’re worn out and don’t see any good coming out of your efforts.

That has been me so many times.  Once I had a conversation with a friend, (I can’t even remember who it was now…lol,) but I remember us saying that we sometimes felt overwhelmed and tired just thinking about all that we knew God wanted us to do.  Why couldn’t things just be “easy,” we joked, (we were joking, but really, we kind of meant it.)  We were growing weary serving the Lord.

But now, I truly believe that there are seasons in life.  Some seasons are busy – we’re out there doing a whole lot of work for the Lord.  In other seasons that we go through, it’s just us and God.  We wonder why things have gotten more quiet. We may feel like we’re not being used by God.  We may feel like giving up.  And this has been me many times.  But in those times, we have to ask God to refresh us and give us back our passion to serve Him.

Image

Recently I had a time like this.  I was so tired of giving.  I just wanted to sit on the couch for a month, do nothing, and eat cheetos!lol…And yes, relaxation time is good. 🙂  …but God showed me that once I was done relaxing, it was time to get moving again.

So there you have it.  That’s the truth!  We all have our cheeto days…but I pray that you do not get stuck there…keep on moving, and ask God for a sign for what direction you should be moving towards if you’re confused.  Sometimes it’s just as a simple as a word from friend, or a picture that you see in a magazine.  God speaks in all kinds of ways!  🙂  Don’t give up – God loves you even though you may be going through a tough time.  Be encouraged!  Take time to refresh yourself in His presence.  Maybe it’s turning off all the distractions and having some quiet time with Him.  Just like we share secrets with close friends, I believe that God has amazing secrets to share with us – we just have to be spending time with Him to hear.  🙂

Micah H. – Strong and Healthy to do God’s Work

5 Aug

MICAH
For the next few days leading up to our Bride of Christ Brunch, (a fun ministry event for all women which involves yummy food, speakers, worship, pampering, and shopping at the end,) we’ll be featuring amazing women of God who are sharing on the same topic that we’ll be hearing about at the conference: how to be strong and healthy enough to do the Lord’s work, and how to grow closer to the Lord. 🙂

Check out our event here: http://www.successcoachingandtutoring.com/Women-s-Ministry-Events.html

Today’s interview will feature Micah Harris, a teacher, ministry leader and dancer. Thanks for sharing, Micah! 🙂

How do you eat/cook healthy or plan healthy meals on the go?

We try to avoid fast food. If I ever MUST stop in for fast food, I avoid large quantities. Sometimes, I can satisfy hunger on the go with kids meal portions or select healthy choices from their menus. If I MUST get a sandwich, I just don’t add fries and soda; I will buy a bottled water.

We like to keep healthy snacks in the household too. I love Greek yogurt in the morning. Almonds, cranberries, or whole grain tortilla chips are delicious, too.

For dinner, we eat a lot of fish and steam our vegetables. All of our meals at home only take about 30 minutes to make.

What are some easy ways to add fitness or activity to you or your family’s life?

My husband and I love to go jogging together. I really appreciate the change of scenery and companionship. Additionally, I add dance classes and rehearsals to my workout routine. I love “accidental working out”. I want a good workout while enjoying myself and not being completely aware of “the burn”. On a treadmill, time drags, I’m not going anywhere, and after what feels like 30 minutes have passed, I will find where I have only burned 3 calories, ran .01 miles, and have been running for 5 minutes.

What is your favorite way to spend time with the Lord?

I like to start my day with thanksgiving. I read my “Verse of the Day”, asking God to reveal its personal meaning to me throughout the day, and then I say something like, “Thank you, Jesus, for this day” before my to-do list, or impending tasks, or anything else steals my joy.

Thanks again for sharing, Micah!

Blessings,

Lauren

Time for a Facebook Break?

5 Jul

july 4

For the past two days, I’ve had two different friends confide in me that they have had to take facebook breaks.  Here was the reason why:

They had begun comparing themselves to others.  They noticed girls who were losing weight faster than them.  They noticed people who seemed to have better lives and better families.  They saw people with two and three kids, when they were struggling to get pregnant.

dad

Guys; facebook isn’t real.  We post pictures and images that put our best face forward. We usually only share the good.

Or, perhaps, reading through friends annoying updates is causing you in turn to become harsh and critical.

Friends; God’s word tells us to fix our thoughts on things that are pleasant.  So if Facebook is causing you to become negative, it may be time to take a step back.

Take a walk.  Spend time with friends in person.  Call someone you haven’t talked to in awhile.  Stop taking pictures of your kids to post on facebook, and play with them instead. 🙂  Life is meant to be lived, not to be spent surfing facebook while your kids are begging you to read them a story.

Facebook is great for keeping up with friends or promoting business, but remember that if it is causing comparisons or negativity, then it might be time to limit your use.

Blessings! 🙂

Coffee and a Chat with Jessica Chacko

10 Apr

jessica

I love to interview friends, but this interview was especially fun because it features my childhood friend from elementary school, Jessica, who is now a Producer at the Christian Broadcasting Network.

What does beauty mean to you?

I think the concept of beauty is something most young girls and women have struggled with at some point in their lives- myself included. But when I think about the most beautiful women I know, they are all women with the most beautiful hearts full and overflowing with the love of God!

The Bible has some pretty clear things to say about beauty:

“Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4

What inner trait about yourself makes you feel beautiful?

The inner trait that makes me feel most beautiful is compassion. I think compassion is a deep kind of beauty that all people of all walks of life can recognize. Just think of Mother Theresa. Watching her love a beggar or hold an orphan reminds me that there is a deep beauty in connecting with God’s heart for the lost and the hurting. I love helping the lost, the unloved and the oppressed. I feel most beautiful and most alive when I am connecting with God’s heart for His people- whether that is at work, at church or on the mission field. I believe it is His beautiful love that inspires and compels us to be beautiful as He is beautiful.

What outer feature about yourself do you love?

I guess I would have to say my eyes. My dad is from India and my mom is American and of Scottish, Irish and German descent. I’ve always enjoyed seeing how I resemble them in different ways. I think my eyes are a good example of this. I can see traits of both my mom and my dad in the way God created my eyes.

What is one (inexpensive or free thing) you or other women can do to make themselves feel beautiful?

The two things that I constantly have to remind myself are: 1. That it’s okay not to be perfect. 2. Allow God to tell you how He sees you.

My mom told me a long time ago that when she feels unhappy with something about herself she asks God what He thinks of it. It is amazing how a Word from God can make such a difference in how we perceive ourselves. The things we find imperfect about ourselves, He absolutely loves.

Coffee and a Chat with Janine

9 Apr

Image

Here at Loving Life, we LOVE to support our missionaries!  So I was lucky and honored to be able to sit down with my friend Janine Weaver, a missionary, minister, and mom, who is soon leaving to do mission work with her family in Germany.  We will miss her, but we know that God has an amazing work to do through her!

Janine had a lot of wonderful things to share on how God sees each and every one of us as beautiful, and I know that you will enjoy her interview below. 🙂

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty = Holiness. That is what beauty means to me. It doesn’t mean that I have to be perfect. It doesn’t mean that my past doesn’t have major issues and failures. It means that God has washed me, is washing me and that I am being changed into the holiness of God and HIS beauty is shining through me to others.

What inner trait about yourself do you love?

One inner trait that makes me feel beautiful is my transparency. I feel like people need to see that on-fire, Jesus loving, sold-out Christian women are real women with real issues that they handle with God. I never want anyone to feel like going after God is impossible for them.

What outer feature about yourself do you love?

My one outer feature I love about me is my eyes.  I was once told that they look like a “sea of tranquil glass.” 🙂

What is one free or inexpensive thing that we as women can do to make ourselves feel beautiful?

TAKE NAPS!! Rest makes us nicer and more beautiful.

Thanks again to Janine for her fun and insightful interview! 🙂

Are you always happy?

5 Apr

beauty 28

Earlier this week, a friend of mine asked me if I am always happy.

I am glad that I come across this way, but honestly, I have hard times just like everyone else.

I just choose to figure out the solution instead of sitting in the problem, (and maybe also allow myself a mental health night where I eat junk food, lay in bed alone, and read O magazine!)lol… 🙂  My kiddies are pretty good at this too!haha…

babies

But after taking a night to relax and regroup, I’m ready to move on.

I’m too thankful for all that God has done for me to waste time moping around.

I live in a country where we have food at our disposal, and we often throw it away because it goes bad.

beauty 2

I don’t know what it’s like to have to sleep outside other than camping, (which I’ve never actually done!lol..)

And like my Pastor once said, when other countries are thankful for just a glass of clean water, we swim in pools of water in our backyards.

house 11

This isn’t to say that we’re better, (as I’m sure that there are people without clean drinking water who have more inner peace than people with pools in their backyards,) but it is to say that everyone has something to be happy about if we would just choose to focus on what is right, (versus what is wrong.)

party ten

We can sit in our problems, or we can deal with them, (with God’s help,) and figure out a solution! 🙂

Blessings!
