What if my gift is too small?

With social media, TV, and Facebook, we often see amazing stories of people who are breaking Olympic records, traveling to other countries helping sex-trafficked women and children, and winning all kinds of awards.  Sometimes we are happy for them.  Other times it can make us feel as though we should be doing more.

But we should never compare our gifts to others.  Recently a friend told me about a trip she was taking across the world to help abused women.  I could have been jealous, wishing that I too could travel internationally and make a difference.  But I know that for me, I am making a difference right at home. 🙂

Right now, my mission is to make a difference right here in my city by loving my children and the children who come to my preschool.

Right now, my mission is to love my husband and friends, and be an example to others that marriage still works.  🙂

Let’s never compare ourselves to others and think that the gifts we can share with others are “too small.”  Not at all. 🙂 Our gifts are just different.  Some gifts may bring fame and fortune, and other gifts may not, but that doesn’t make one better than the other.

Be happy with the gifts that you can share with others.  What is a gift that you can share with others today? : )

Adventures in Homeschooling

29 Jan

Image

As some of you recently know, the kiddies and I just started homeschooling, and we absolutely love it!

Because the babies are so little, I am mostly doing learn through play, but we also have some basics that we do every day: letters, numbers, penmanship, Bible, reading, practical life activities, Spanish, and Montessori inspired lessons and stations.

OK – that was a little more than basics, 🙂 but for a former teacher, I can’t help it – I love learning and I love teaching my kids to love to learn too!

Here are a few pictures from today – keep in mind that it snowed last night, so that made homeschooling even more fun – we got to learn while cozied up under blankets, and the kiddies were excited, knowing that they would get to play in the snow once school was done! 🙂

Here is a picture of Gabriel doing a lesson on patterns and colors with glass rocks.

Here is a picture of Zoe playing with letters and numbers.

Although I am not a “puzzle person,” lol, I am learning to enjoy it for the kids sake! 🙂

Image

We started early today, so we finished around 10 a.m. – enough time to watch some fun educational videos that reinforced our Spanish, (Dora!!,) 🙂 and Sesame Street videos that reinforced our numbers and letters.  We also did some singing and dancing with maracas that I brought back from missions trips to Mexico.  Also, Gabriel dressed up like a ninja, but he declined any photo ops!lol…

I’d say it’s been a fun day so far!

How about you?   Do you homeschool?  How do you teach your kiddies?

Blessings,

Lauren

When You Feel like you’re not good enough

babies on bikes

Here is a picture of my kids riding their bikes in the backyard – and yes, you can see the homemade safety patio gate made from lawn chairs, a toy roof, and the grill!lol…just trying to keep my babies safe! 🙂

Often, I wonder if I’m doing everything I can to be a good mom.  In whatever stage of life we’re in, career person, mother, father, student, or wherever we are, we often have a nagging sense that we could be doing more, or doing a better job.

As a mom, I read all of the mommy blogs, but lately, I’ve had to step back.  I have had to realize that God has equipped me to be the best mom that I can be.  Yes; I can read and study on how to do better, how to best educate my kids, what activities to do with them, and all of the parenting techniques that I can find in the  books, but nothing is better than just being a person who loves God and has His peace surrounding you.  🙂

That’s what my kids will really benefit from – a mama who is totally and 100% focused on loving and pleasing God – let’s face it…the peace, joy, and love that radiates from someone who has been in the presence of our Lord is just amazing, and everyone can feel it and enjoy it! 🙂

Whatever stage you’re in, set your eyes on things above.  Nothing else matters but God.  If you lose your house, you can still have God.  Material things come and go, but a loving relationship with your heavenly Father, and the peace that it brings, will stand the test of fire and time! 🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

My Happy, Frugal Thanksgiving Wish

28 Nov

hubby pic

Here is a picture of my hubby and I at a recent wedding.  Like most Thanksgivings, we ate a-lot!lol…  Let’s face it.  For most of us, Thanksgiving is all about the yams, stuffing, turkey, (repeat!lol,) and then passing out in front of the TV to watch football, and starting over.  🙂 Yes, I love to eat too, but let’s not forget to remember the thing we should be most thankful for – all the blessings that our God has given us.

food cpc

Here is a picture of some of the food at a recent party I attended – this might look like a simple spread to some, but let’s not forget that there are people out there who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.   We’re upset that we haven’t lost weight, while others are wondering where their next meal is coming from.  While we are busy trying to de clutter, design, and stage our houses, there are people who are wondering how they’ll get toys this Christmas.  (Below is a picture of my son and his friend – we went through the toys and gave many of them away.) 🙂

boys

So, let’s not get so caught up in the gluttony and materialism, and forget to thank God for the things that really matter – for the things that are eternal.  Set your eyes on things above.  We are on this earth for a short time.  All of the riches, 401K and retirement savings, awards, glory, houses, and things will one day slip through our fingers as we pass on to be with Jesus, the eternal lover of our souls!  Let’s begin living for the things that really matter, and give thanks for the little things! 🙂

Blessings,

Lauren

When I felt like giving up…

21 Sep

Image

So often, people think we have it all together based on appearances, (like this picture of my friend and I before a wedding.)  But behind the smiling facebook photos, 🙂 the truth is that everyone has faced a time in life where they felt like giving up.  You have probably heard the verse, “do not grow weary in doing good, for in due time you will reap a harvest,” but it can still be tough to keep on doing the right thing when you’re worn out and don’t see any good coming out of your efforts.

That has been me so many times.  Once I had a conversation with a friend, (I can’t even remember who it was now…lol,) but I remember us saying that we sometimes felt overwhelmed and tired just thinking about all that we knew God wanted us to do.  Why couldn’t things just be “easy,” we joked, (we were joking, but really, we kind of meant it.)  We were growing weary serving the Lord.

But now, I truly believe that there are seasons in life.  Some seasons are busy – we’re out there doing a whole lot of work for the Lord.  In other seasons that we go through, it’s just us and God.  We wonder why things have gotten more quiet. We may feel like we’re not being used by God.  We may feel like giving up.  And this has been me many times.  But in those times, we have to ask God to refresh us and give us back our passion to serve Him.

Image

Recently I had a time like this.  I was so tired of giving.  I just wanted to sit on the couch for a month, do nothing, and eat cheetos!lol…And yes, relaxation time is good. 🙂  …but God showed me that once I was done relaxing, it was time to get moving again.

So there you have it.  That’s the truth!  We all have our cheeto days…but I pray that you do not get stuck there…keep on moving, and ask God for a sign for what direction you should be moving towards if you’re confused.  Sometimes it’s just as a simple as a word from friend, or a picture that you see in a magazine.  God speaks in all kinds of ways!  🙂  Don’t give up – God loves you even though you may be going through a tough time.  Be encouraged!  Take time to refresh yourself in His presence.  Maybe it’s turning off all the distractions and having some quiet time with Him.  Just like we share secrets with close friends, I believe that God has amazing secrets to share with us – we just have to be spending time with Him to hear.  🙂

It’s been a while – what we have been up to!

27 Aug

IMG_9922
I just realized that it has been a few weeks since my last blog, and here’s why: I just started a new job, the kids are getting ready for preschool, and I’ve been getting the house clean!lol…that last one may be an everyday occurrence for some of you, but tidying up doesn’t come naturally for me, so it’s something that I have been working on. 🙂

IMG_9683

We have also been visiting the park more, (especially since it’s right across the street,) 🙂 and I started a new moms group that has some of it’s meetings at night, so I can work and still be a part of it. …So there have been lots of changes, but they are all so much fun!

IMG_6792

I’m also excited about the next women’s conference we’ll be having. So many women feel like they’re “just” a mom, or “just” a call center worker, or “just” someone’s wife”… so many of us feel defined by our jobs, the house we live in, if we have kids or not, or who we’re married to. But God says that we are His daughters, and that we’re fearfully and wonderfully made! He says that we are created in His image, and that makes us so much more than just how we look, who our friends are, or the size of our house.

I am in the process of getting the date and location for our next event, and I already have some great speakers lined up. I’m excited to see what the Lord does!

Blessings,

Lauren

Micah H. – Strong and Healthy to do God’s Work

5 Aug

MICAH
For the next few days leading up to our Bride of Christ Brunch, (a fun ministry event for all women which involves yummy food, speakers, worship, pampering, and shopping at the end,) we’ll be featuring amazing women of God who are sharing on the same topic that we’ll be hearing about at the conference: how to be strong and healthy enough to do the Lord’s work, and how to grow closer to the Lord. 🙂

Check out our event here: http://www.successcoachingandtutoring.com/Women-s-Ministry-Events.html

Today’s interview will feature Micah Harris, a teacher, ministry leader and dancer. Thanks for sharing, Micah! 🙂

How do you eat/cook healthy or plan healthy meals on the go?

We try to avoid fast food. If I ever MUST stop in for fast food, I avoid large quantities. Sometimes, I can satisfy hunger on the go with kids meal portions or select healthy choices from their menus. If I MUST get a sandwich, I just don’t add fries and soda; I will buy a bottled water.

We like to keep healthy snacks in the household too. I love Greek yogurt in the morning. Almonds, cranberries, or whole grain tortilla chips are delicious, too.

For dinner, we eat a lot of fish and steam our vegetables. All of our meals at home only take about 30 minutes to make.

What are some easy ways to add fitness or activity to you or your family’s life?

My husband and I love to go jogging together. I really appreciate the change of scenery and companionship. Additionally, I add dance classes and rehearsals to my workout routine. I love “accidental working out”. I want a good workout while enjoying myself and not being completely aware of “the burn”. On a treadmill, time drags, I’m not going anywhere, and after what feels like 30 minutes have passed, I will find where I have only burned 3 calories, ran .01 miles, and have been running for 5 minutes.

What is your favorite way to spend time with the Lord?

I like to start my day with thanksgiving. I read my “Verse of the Day”, asking God to reveal its personal meaning to me throughout the day, and then I say something like, “Thank you, Jesus, for this day” before my to-do list, or impending tasks, or anything else steals my joy.

Thanks again for sharing, Micah!

Blessings,

Lauren
